According to NITI Aayog CEO B V R Subrahmanyam, India is attempting to promote the circular economy because there is a large potential for recycling electronic waste. Subrahmanyam, speaking at an event hosted by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), also stated that India is extremely reliant on imports of lithium and rare earth elements, which are critical components in many electronic devices and industrial applications such as medical technology, aerospace, and defence. He stated that if electronic garbage is not recycled, it might harm and pollute the environment.

"There is a huge potential for recycling of electronic waste," Subrahmanyam said.

The NITI Aayog CEO said India is currently 5th largest economy and by 2030 it will become the third largest economy.

Meanwhile, as part of the Mission LiFE's 'Promote Circularity Campaign,' MeitY transmitted cost-effective Li-ion battery recycling technology to nine recycling enterprises and startups on Friday. MeitY developed this technique in partnership with the government of Telangana and industry partner Greenko Energies Pvt Ltd as part of the Centre of Excellence on E-waste Management established at the Centre for Material for Electronics technique (C-MET), Hyderabad. In addition, MeitY secretary Alkesh Kumar Sharma praised the C-MET for producing a low-cost solution for local recycling enterprises and startups.

He also praised C-MET scientists for developing niche technologies such as hafnium metal sponge from effluents, which is only available in a few nations.
