In a significant move, the Maharashtra government and Toyota Kirloskar have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a greenfield project in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Announced at the Sahyadri Guest House, this initiative is poised to revolutionise Maharashtra's automotive industry with a focus on electric and hybrid vehicles.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde hailed the project as a “revolutionary step” for the state’s motor manufacturing sector. The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar venture, involving an investment of Rs 20,000 crore, is set to generate approximately 16,000 direct and indirect jobs. It is also projected to produce around 400,000 cars annually. The government has allocated 850 acres of land specifically for the production of these vehicles.

Shinde emphasised that the project represents a new era for India’s electric vehicle industry, aligning with the state’s push for greater adoption of electric vehicles and infrastructure improvements, including EV charging stations. He praised Maharashtra’s robust infrastructure, skilled workforce, and comprehensive resources in education, healthcare, and housing as key factors making it an attractive location for such large-scale projects.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the MoU historic, noting that while Maharashtra had many players in the automobile sector, the absence of Toyota had left a gap. He asserted that Toyota’s entry would complete the sector, boost job creation, and stimulate economic growth in the region. Fadnavis also highlighted that this agreement aligns with the state’s ambition to become a $1 trillion economy, under Shinde’s leadership.
