From being the second largest crude steel producer, India aspires to become a green steel producer in the near future. Committed to its decarbonisation goals, the government has recently appointed a taskforce to work towards ensuring sustainability in the steel sector.

This taskforce involves various think tanks, academicians, industries as well as ministries to develop viable solutions in ensuring sustainable growth and decarbonisation of steel, said the Minister of State for Rural Development and Steel, Faggan Singh Kulaste, in Rajya Sabha.

Coal is used to manufacture steel and the emissions are intensive. Experts point out that India’s reliance on coal is high as compared to other countries. Lack of scrap supply and the  EU imposing Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism tariff are the biggest challenges facing the sector.

The government is seized of the situation and has introduced the Steel Scrap Recycling Policy and Motor Vehicles Rules. These policies if well implemented are expected to lead to production of good quality scrap which can contribute to decarbonisation.
