In a stark reminder of the urgent need for climate action, Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud highlighted the severe weather extremes hitting Delhi. Addressing a foundation stone-laying ceremony for new trial court buildings in Karkardooma, Shastri Park, and Rohini, the CJI underscored the urgency of adopting a “green lifestyle” to combat climate change.

The CJI pointed out that Delhi has recently experienced record-breaking heatwaves followed by unprecedented rainfall, signalling a critical need for infrastructure that reflects the realities of climate change. Emphasising the importance of reducing carbon emissions, he expressed satisfaction that the new court buildings will incorporate heat-island mitigation and mitigate environmental impacts.

Justice Chandrachud affirmed that the legal system is grounded in principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity and stressed that courts play a vital role in upholding these values. He noted that recent revelations of fabricated evidence in a case illustrate the crucial role of courts in maintaining justice.

In his address, the CJI also reflected on the broader role of courts as essential public service providers. He remarked that court buildings symbolise more than just physical structures—they embody hope and the pursuit of justice. The new complexes are set to enhance court efficiency and reduce case backlog, reflecting a commitment to a more just and accessible legal system.
