Karnataka has met its increasing energy demand during the peak summer months by strategically using both non-renewable and renewable energy resources, according to state Energy Minister K J George.

In addition, the minister stated at a press conference that the state's power usage reached unprecedented levels from February to May of this year.

"On February 12, the demand peaked at 17,220 MW. "On April 5, the state's highest average daily consumption of 332 million units demonstrated the state's commitment to a sustainable energy future," he continued.

He stated that the state's ability to control the excess demand for electricity caused by the unheard-of heat waves was made possible by a variety of tactics, including enhanced generation capacity, the integration of renewable energy, effective grid management, and demand-side management programmes.

"It is evidence of the state's proactive approach to infrastructure development and energy planning."

He added that the Karnataka government arranged for the trade of excess power with other states during certain hours in order to meet the state's energy needs.

For example, from October 2023 to May, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh traded electricity for a total of 300–600 MW during pre- and post-solar hours. From June 16 to September 30, Uttar Pradesh will regain control over this power. With Punjab, a comparable agreement was reached for 500MW of round-the-clock (RTC) power starting in November 2023. From June 16 to September 30, the same will be returned," George continued.
