Clean energy company ReNew announced on Thursday the completion of its inaugural interstate transmission project.

The Koppal Transmission Scheme, awarded in FY22, has been executed within an accelerated timeframe and facilitates the transmission of 1,500 MW of renewable energy in the Koppal region of Karnataka, as stated in a company release.

The project encompasses the construction of a new 400/220 kV substation at Koppal, along with a 276 Ckt Km (circuit kilometer) 400 kV D/C quad moose transmission line extension from the 400 kV GIS Bays at the PGCIL Narendra (New) substation. The outstanding transmission project, transmitting 3,500 MW, is anticipated to conclude by June 2024.

Simultaneously, an agreement was formalised for a second joint investment in the transmission sector with Norfund, the Norwegian Government's Investment Fund for developing countries, and KLP, Norway's largest pension company, via their joint entity, KNI India AS.

Norfund's portion originates from Norway's recently established Climate Investment Fund, overseen by Norfund.

ReNew has secured three transmission projects in Karnataka under the ISTS (Inter State Transmission Scheme). These projects form part of the ISTS designated for transmitting the potential 5 GW of wind and solar power identified in Karnataka under Phase-I, aimed at implementation and integration with the ISTS grid for 35 years. The state-owned Central Transmission Utility (CTU) will oversee billing, collection, and disbursement of revenue for these transmission projects.

"We are proud to partner with Norfund and KLP to support India's green energy transition and look forward to strengthening this partnership in the future," remarked Kailash Vaswani, Group CFO of ReNew Pvt Ltd, in the statement.

Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, Norway's Minister of International Development, noted, "To secure the necessary investments for the vital energy transition, public funding must mobilise private capital. The signing between the Climate Investment Fund, ReNew, and KLP is a great example of this."
