As the Paris 2024 Olympics charges ahead, it's already making headlines for its green credentials. The Games are on track to become the most environmentally conscious Olympics ever, with a bold commitment to slashing carbon emissions by 50 percent. The target is to cut emissions from 3.5 million tonnes seen in previous Games to just 1.75 million tonnes.

The green playbook includes a significant push towards renewable energy, with geothermal and solar power leading the charge. All Olympic venues are easily accessible by public transport, and the city has rolled out 1,000 km of dedicated bicycle lanes alongside 3,000 rental bikes to promote eco-friendly travel.

Food sustainability is also in the spotlight, with a focus on plant-based and locally sourced options. This move comes as Paris aims to tackle the significant emissions associated with meat and dairy production, which contribute to 18 percent of global greenhouse gases.

Unlike London and Tokyo, which built new facilities for their Games, Paris is utilising existing structures or temporary setups for 95 percent of its events. The new Aquatics Centre in Saint-Denis, a standout venue, boasts solar power and uses recycled, bio-based materials.

In response to Paris's summer heat, organisers have deployed 2,500 temporary cooling units for athletes, although the accommodations remain minimalist, featuring recycled fishing net mattresses and cardboard beds. Most furniture used during the Games is leased and will be repurposed afterwards. The 2,800 new Olympic Village apartments will transition to residential use after the Games.

With 15,000 athletes, 45,000 volunteers, 26,000 media representatives in action, and over 10 million visitors expected, the Games will inevitably generate significant emissions. However, organisers have launched a comprehensive funding programme to offset these impacts through projects like tree planting and forest restoration.

Despite the challenges, Paris 2024 is proving itself as a trailblazer in sustainable sporting events, setting a high bar for future Olympics and major global events.
