One of the standout features of Paris 2024 is its dedication to eco-friendly practices. The US team requested air conditioning for their athletes, but Paris 2024 stood firm on its sustainability principles, opting out of air conditioning in favour of greener alternatives.

A striking example of this commitment is the cardboard beds, humorously dubbed “anti-sex” online. These beds, made from durable cardboard and featuring mattress squares crafted from recycled fishing nets, are designed to be fully recyclable after the Games.

The event aims to cut its carbon footprint by 50 percent compared to previous Olympics, working towards a carbon-neutral goal. To achieve this, the Games have embraced minimal resource use, biofuels, and hydrogen energy. Venues are connected to the public electricity grid to reduce reliance on generators, and eco-friendly furniture, including chairs made from recycled bottle caps and bean bags from parachute fabric, are in place. Medals are another testament to sustainability, with gold and silver medals made from 100 percent recycled materials and bronze incorporating 18 grams of iron sourced from the Eiffel Tower.

Temporary venues have been designed with minimal environmental impact, with plans for these structures to be repurposed into affordable housing, schools, and recreational facilities for the local community after the Games. About 90 percent of the assets used at the venues are intended to have a second life beyond the Olympics.

Food at the Games also reflects Paris's green ethos. The 13 million meals served have produced less than half the carbon emissions of traditional French meals, thanks to a focus on plant-based ingredients and reduced food miles. Reusable bottles and strategically placed water fountains support this sustainability drive.

Transportation has also embraced green practices. With over 80 percent of the venues located near the Olympic Village, travel emissions have been minimized. Electric, hybrid, and hydrogen-powered vehicles are in use, and bicycle infrastructure has been expanded to accommodate increased demand.

Paris 2024 is not just celebrating athletic excellence but is also setting a new benchmark for sustainable global events.
