ONGC, India's flagship oil and gas producer, aims to reduce gas flaring and achieve zero methane emissions by 2030 as part of its decarbonisation plan.

ONGC has already made significant contributions towards reducing gas flaring and will continue to work towards bringing it down to nil, in line with its environmental commitments.

In a LinkedIn post, Chairman Arun Kumar Singh highlighted India's growing importance in the global energy landscape, projecting its share in global energy demand growth to be 25 percent over the next two decades.

India's share in global primary energy consumption is expected to increase to 9.8 percent by 2050, according to the International Energy Agency. Adopting cleaner, greener, and more sustainable alternatives in the nation's energy consumption is essential to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

ONGC aims to replace gas with green power to generate electricity and meet oil and gas fields' compression and other process needs.

The company plans to replace gas with green electricity in its Mumbai offshore fields on the Arabian Sea by 2028, freeing gas for sale to industries like fertiliser and power plants.

"We envisage bringing green electricity to our Mumbai offshore fields on the Arabian Sea, replacing natural gas, which is currently being used to drive power devices at process platforms," he said.
