A panel has been established by the National Green Tribunal to examine brick kilns in the Uttar Pradesh district of Mathura that are allegedly running illegally.

Numerous brick kilns in the district were allegedly operating in violation of environmental regulations, according to a petition that the NGT was considering.

Around 360 brick kilns were operating in the district, and several of them were breaking the rules, according to submissions made by the petitioner's attorney. This information was noted by a bench consisting of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member A Senthil Vel.

In an order dated May 8, the bench stated, "We are of the opinion that the brick kilns operating in district Mathura need to be inspected by a joint committee to ascertain the extent of the violation, if any, by them."

Therefore, it said, "we form a joint committee comprising of the District Magistrate (DM), Mathura, and a senior officer deputed by the member secretary, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB).

The tribunal directed the joint committee to inspect the brick kilns and ascertain the extent of violation by them and submit the report to the member secretary of the UPPCB within a fortnight.

NGT stated, "The member secretary, based on the aforementioned report, will provide the brick kilns found to be in violation of environmental norms with a hearing opportunity, determine the extent of the violation and take appropriate action, including the action of levying environmental compensation, and submit action taken report within three months."
