In a historic move, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has announced the ICOM Award for Sustainable Development Practise in Museums. The first global accolade of its kind, this initiative aims to encourage innovative museum practises that contribute to a sustainable and resilient world.

By focusing on the five dimensions of Agenda 2030—People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership—the award aims to empower museums worldwide to embrace and champion sustainable practises.

ICOM's vision extends beyond individual museums, aiming to galvanise collective action. All ICOM bodies, including national and international committees, regional alliances, and affiliated organisations, are urged to actively promote sustainable development practises within the museum community. This united front creates a ground-breaking initiative that transcends borders and organisational structures.

The award, open to ICOM member museums, encourages institutions to join ICOM if not already members. With applications accepted from March to September 2024, the project applicants, or "Candidates" will undergo a meticulous selection and evaluation process overseen by an international jury. The winner will be unveiled during the ICOM 27th General Conference in Dubai 2025.

Museums that are ICOM members can apply for the award. Museums can seek institutional membership through their National Committee if not a member. For some categories, an ICOM Individual Member can apply on behalf of their museum with a letter of support.

An international jury will assess eligible projects based on the five dimensions of Agenda 2030, creating a longlist, then a shortlist, and ultimately selecting three finalists. The winner will be announced at the 2025 Dubai General Conference.

ICOM bodies, after participating in capacity-building sessions, can endorse applications. The endorsement process involves appointing a Board member as the reference person.

In partnership with ICCROM and Curating Tomorrow, ICOM aims to provide learning opportunities through capacity-building sessions for ICOM Bodies and interested Candidates. These sessions will enhance understanding of the ICOM Award, Agenda 2030, Sustainable Development Goals, and Sustainable Development.

As museums evolve into sustainability champions, the ICOM Award emerges as a catalyst for global change, inspiring a collaborative and resilient future for the museum sector and our shared planet.
