Backed by a Rs-200-crore purse, a new set of guidelines to bolster testing facilities, infrastructure, and institutional support has been unveiled by the union environment and renewable energy ministry. The initiative is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and reflects the country's commitment to building a strong quality and regulatory framework within the Green Hydrogen (GH2) sector. Among its aims is to assist in the establishment of new testing facilities and the modernisation of existing ones.

As per a press release by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the Scheme Guidelines, announced on Thursday, focus on identifying and addressing gaps in existing testing facilities for components, technologies, and processes across the GH2 value chain. The investment will help India create the robust framework of safety standards required for sustainable and reliable GH2 production and trade.

As the Scheme Implementation Agency, The National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) will oversee the allocation of funds and ensure adherence to the scheme’s objectives.

This initiative is in line with India’s broader goal of achieving Aatma Nirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) through clean energy solutions and being a global flagbearer of clean energy transition.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched on January 4, 2023, aims to deploy Rs 19,744 crores by FY 2029-30, according to the press release.

This ambitious initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions significantly, cut dependence on fossil fuel imports, and elevate India’s stature in both technology and market leadership in the GH2 sector.
