In a significant move towards reducing carbon emissions in the aviation sector, the Indian government has unveiled indicative targets for blending Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) with aircraft turbine fuel (ATF). Aligned with the national commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2070, the government aims to increase the blending percentage progressively over the coming years.

According to official announcements, the targets are set as follows:

1. By 2027, there will be a 1 percent blending of SAF in ATF for international flights.

2. This percentage is expected to double to 2 percent by 2028 for international flights.

These targets, crucial for steering the aviation industry towards sustainability, have been carefully formulated considering various factors. Stakeholder comments played a pivotal role in shaping the indicative goals. Additionally, the government viewed the capacity of SAF plants currently under construction across the country and the projected sales of ATF.

To qualify as sustainable, SAF must meet specific criteria, ensuring minimal environmental impact. This includes reducing lifecycle carbon emissions, limited fresh-water requirements, no competition with food production, and a guarantee against causing deforestation. These criteria underscore the government's commitment to promoting environmentally friendly aviation practices.

Various feedstocks have been identified as sustainable sources for producing SAF. These include corn grain, oil seeds, and algae. Utilising such feedstocks aligns with the government's broader agenda to encourage responsible and sustainable sourcing practices in the aviation fuel industry.

This move signifies a strategic shift in the country's aviation landscape, promoting the adoption of cleaner and greener fuels. As India strives to achieve its ambitious goal of net zero emissions by 2070, these indicative targets for SAF blending mark a crucial step in fostering sustainability within the aviation sector.

The government's proactive approach, considering stakeholder feedback and assessing the industry's capacity, underscores its commitment to driving positive change in the aviation sector's environmental footprint.
