In a ground-breaking development at the MENA Climate Week 2023 in Riyadh, India and Saudi Arabia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that signifies a monumental shift towards dependable, cost-effective, and eco-friendly energy solutions.

Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R. K. Singh, made this significant announcement during the event, marking a crucial milestone in the fight against climate change and the pursuit of a sustainable energy future.

The MoU inked between India and Saudi Arabia encompasses several critical areas, including electrical interconnections, green hydrogen, and supply chain collaboration. This strategic agreement lays the foundation for cooperative projects and the establishment of resilient supply chains, fostering stronger ties between the two nations in the realm of green energy.

MENA Climate Week 2023, hosted by Saudi Arabia, has convened diverse stakeholders to deliberate on climate solutions and actions, setting the stage for COP28. Key topics under discussion include the Global Stocktake and the economic and energy security facets embedded within the framework of the Paris Agreement.

Minister R. K. Singh, in a session titled "Global Stocktake of the Paris Agreement Regional Dialogue," highlighted India's unwavering commitment to environmental leadership. India has set ambitious targets, aiming to reduce emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieve Net Zero by 2070. The country has been making significant strides in non-fossil fuel power generation, grid integration, distribution networks, promotion of renewable energy, expansion of energy access, 100% household electrification, and the implementation of innovative energy policies.

Singh also unveiled India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, which boasts a staggering $2.3 billion budget allocation. Furthermore, he extended an invitation to MENA countries to join the Global Biofuel Alliance, fostering sustainable biofuels development and trade. Minister Singh emphasized the significance of global cooperation in overcoming the challenges associated with the energy transition, particularly for developing nations and the global south.

At MENA Climate Week, Minister Singh underscored the pivotal role of individual actions and sustainable behavioural choices in achieving a sustainable energy transition. The high-level Global Stocktake of the Paris Agreement (GST) regional dialogue, taking place during the event, serves as a platform for policymakers, key stakeholders, and partners to discuss regional insights and contribute to shaping the GST's outcomes.

This dialogue also serves as an avenue to address challenges, identify solutions, and seize opportunities for bolstering climate action and support within the MENA context and on a global scale. The GST plays a crucial role in enabling countries to periodically evaluate their progress in implementing the Paris Agreement, considering mitigation, adaptation, means of implementation and support, and equity, all grounded in the latest scientific knowledge.

Commencing in Glasgow in 2021 and concluding at COP 28 in Dubai, the first GST marks a significant political milestone, shedding light on the collective global progress toward realizing the provisions and objectives of the Paris Agreement. It provides

an opportunity to acknowledge the challenges while showcasing numerous opportunities to accelerate climate action, addressing various regional priorities. Most importantly, it sends a resounding message of unity and cooperation to the world, paving the way for collective ownership and effective implementation of climate action initiatives.
