India is stepping on the clean energy gas like never before with an ambitious plan to add a whopping 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy to its power grid by 2030. This bold move is a double win, aiming to significantly reduce air pollution in major cities and lessen India's reliance on coal as its economy booms.

Being the third largest greenhouse gas emitter, India faces increasing pressure to clean up its act. The new target reflects this commitment. By 2030, the government wants clean energy to make up at least 40 percent of its total power capacity, a sharp jump from the current 21.4 percent. This shift is crucial as India grapples with managing its ever-growing energy needs driven by a booming population.

The winds of change started blowing in 2017 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government revamped the rules for awarding renewable energy projects. This move sparked increased competition, driving down prices and making clean energy a more attractive option.

However, some experts are cautious about India achieving its lofty goals. The challenge lies in balancing two key priorities: expanding electricity access in rural areas and meeting the rising energy demands of significant cities. To further complicate matters, India's coal consumption continues to rise, with a 9.1 percent increase reported in the year ending March 2019.

India's ambitious renewable energy target is a significant step toward a cleaner future. It's uncertain whether they can achieve it by 2030, but India is serious about tackling pollution and reducing coal usage.
