The IGI airport, in its pursuit of energy efficiency, has successfully reduced its electricity consumption per passenger by an impressive 57 percent since 2010. This achievement has been realised through the implementation of green building practices and energy-efficient infrastructures, with the aim of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030, as announced by its operator, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL).

Looking ahead, the IGI airport operator has outlined a comprehensive plan to further enhance its efficiency. This includes the introduction of new terminal infrastructure featuring a daylight harvesting concept, among other innovative measures.

The statement highlighted a significant achievement--the electricity consumption per passenger was 5.18kWh in 2010 when Terminal 3 (T-3) became operational. With the implementation of their green initiatives, DIAL managed to slash this consumption to 2.21kWh last year, a remarkable reduction. They further expressed their aim to continue reducing it in the future.

The IGI airport is a shining example of sustainability, fulfilling 100 percent of its electricity needs from renewable sources, including both solar and hydropower. The airport operator's future plans for improving efficiency include new terminal infrastructure with a day light harvesting concept and installation of an advanced BHS system with integrated carts to reduce consumption. Additionally, they will also use an advanced high-side chiller system, 100 percent LED lighting at the terminals, and city-side and airfield ground lighting (AGL) systems, amongst others.
