Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), which released its first TNFD (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures) report, has been recognised as the most sustainable company in the global mining and metals industry. HZL is committed to becoming Nature-Positive and reaching Net Zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.

Decision-makers can include opportunities and hazards associated with nature into their strategic planning with the help of the TNFD report. This is in keeping with the objectivesstated in Target 15 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the TNFD recommendations for assessing, disclosing, and mitigating risks associated with nature.

By actively boosting the use of renewable energy, enhancing operational effectiveness, and switching to low-carbon fuels, the corporation reduces its carbon footprint.

Additionally, its extensive afforestation efforts provide carbon sinks. The company marked a significant achievement during Van Mahotsav week by planting more than 20 lakh plants around its operational units in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand to date.

Hindustan Zinc CE Arun Misra said that they are continuing the process of ‘decarbonisation & environment conservation’, which has been proven by the company’s nature protection activities. Sandeep Kumar Mohanty, Partner – PwC, also said that Corporates all across the globe are recognising the importance of conserving nature. This report is going to pave the way for other corporations to understand, manage and report nature-related risks.

The firm shows corporate social responsibility toward the conservation of biological diversity and partners with the International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN for the purpose of saving and enhancing biological diversity in the regions of operation. This is in accordance with the company’s SDG 2025, Biodiversity Goal 5, illustrating the commitment to promoting and protecting biodiversity throughout the life cycle.

Speaking at the launch of the report, IUCN Country representative, Dr Yash Veer Bhatnagar, affirmed that IUCN has worked zonally with Hindustan Zinc Limited to undertake preparatory measures for the formulation of site-specific Biodiversity Management Plans.

An organised system of responding to emerging nature-related risks can be found in a market-driven report on the TNFD council’s framework and recommendations published in September 2023. TNFD study uses the LEAP (Locate, Evaluate, Assess, and Prepare) approach as per the KMBF (Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework) to systematically integrate environmental issues into Hindustan Zinc Ltd.’s operational and strategic activities.
