In a bold move towards environmental sustainability, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has unveiled its National Mission on Sustainable Packaging Solutions. This ambitious programme aims to achieve a net-zero future by harnessing the collective expertise of eight CSIR labs and industry partners.

Dr N Kalaiselvi, Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and CSIR Director General led the launch, emphasising the initiative’s critical role. “Despite packaging being a major economic contributor, it has largely been overlooked in scientific research. CSIR is prioritising this challenge to deliver innovative processes and technologies,” Kalaiselvi stated.

The mission, spearheaded by CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST), is set to revolutionise the packaging industry. It focuses on developing alternatives to multilayer packaging, PET, and glass bottles alongside new biobased and biodegradable materials. Key features include pioneering smart packaging solutions and establishing India’s first biodegradability testing and monitoring centre.

Additionally, the initiative will tackle microplastics, optimise packaging waste, and introduce blockchain for traceability. During the launch, NIIST showcased new plant-based leather products, highlighting a shift towards sustainable packaging options.
