Sustainable growth, a cornerstone of domestic and global security, will be a major focus of British Foreign Secretary David Lamy's first visit to India, which started on July 24. The visit underlines the importance and value the two nations place on their partnership, recognising it as a key element in their shared future.

Lammy will aim to mobilise support for fast action on the climate crisis, with India as a key partner. This collaboration will advance the transition to clean energy and open up business opportunities for both British and Indian companies. He will also explore opportunities for partnership on initiatives led by India to improve access to clean power, enhance climate resilience in the Global South, and support small island states.

Another objective of the Foreign Secretary is to facilitate a reset of the partnership centred on a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement that will drive the growth of both economies. Echoing the significance the UK accords to its ties with India, the Foreign Secretary started his visit with a quick read-out of its bio: India is the emerging superpower of the 21st century, the largest country in the world with 1.4 billion people and one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, he noted.

Stressing the significance of India being among his first stops after the UK voted Labour to power, the Foreign Secretary gave an insight into how the UK views the world and its foreign policy priorities, underlining shared interests in green transition, new technologies and economic and global security. Resetting relations with the Global South. of which India is the redoubtable leader, will be at the core of the UK's new deal of strengthening its security and prosperity at home.
