India steps on the gas for electric vehicle safety with stricter standards for batteries, powertrains and a wider range of EVs, including e-rickshaws
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) announced stricter safety regulations for electric vehicles (EVs) in a move to bolster confidence and accelerate EV adoption in the country. The new Indian Standards, IS 18590:2024 and IS 18606:2024, will apply to two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and goods trucks, encompassing a wide range of electric vehicles on Indian roads.
These regulations prioritise the safety and performance of the electric vehicle's core - the powertrain. This includes stricter requirements for motors, transmissions, and other crucial components to ensure they meet stringent safety benchmarks.
Recognising the growing popularity of electric three-wheelers and low-speed electric vehicles, BIS has also introduced IS 18294:2023. This standard specifically addresses the safety concerns of e-rickshaws and e-karts, ensuring their construction and operation adhere to safety protocols.
With the addition of these new standards, India now boasts a comprehensive set of 30 safety measures dedicated to electric vehicles and their supporting infrastructure, including charging systems. This signifies a strong commitment from the government to encourage the sustainable and safe growth of electric mobility in India.
