A workshop on "Bioenergy for Sustainable Development: Case Studies and Best Practices" was recently held by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in collaboration with UNIDO and the GEF. The workshop was organised as a component of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM).

Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, Secretary MNRE, spoke during the opening session about the necessity for an energy transition, the efforts the nation has made in this regard, and the significance of bioenergy in achieving this. Dinesh Jagdale, Joint Secretary (Bioenergy), MNRE, emphasised the necessity to have such workshops in order to generate interest in the field and the growing importance of bioenergy on a global scale.

Industry representatives, project developers, state implementing agencies, financial institutions, and representatives of several stakeholder ministries of the Government of India attended the event.

The workshop covered a variety of topics, including case studies of CBG plants based on press mud and segregated urban food waste, case studies of medium and small biogas plants, case studies of biomass plants including innovative biomass supply chain management systems and pellet manufacturing, a code of practice of BIS Standards, a panel discussion on financing waste-to-energy biomethanation projects, and the importance of innovations in the growth of the biomethanation sector.

The case studies highlighted the procedures employed by various types of bioenergy plants across the nation. New methods of financing the development of the biomass supply chain were highlighted throughout the panel discussions as a way to improve the sustainability of the bioenergy industry.
