Ola founder Bhavish Aggarwal has unveiled ‘Bharat Cell,’ a cutting-edge lithium cell battery developed entirely in India. This innovative technology, currently undergoing advanced trials, promises to revolutionise the Indian electric mobility landscape.

Aggarwal claims ‘Bharat Cell’ is a 5G-level leap in lithium cell technology, boasting higher energy density, faster charging capabilities, and lower cost compared to current market leaders. The battery has already received certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards, paving the way for commercial production at Ola’s Gigafactory in Tamil Nadu.

‘Bharat Cell’ will be used not only in Ola’s electric vehicles but also in home energy storage and grid energy storage applications. Its high energy density and low cobalt content contribute to its cost-effectiveness and performance advantages.

While the core cathode-anode technology is developed in India, the raw materials are currently sourced globally. Aggarwal is confident that India can localise this supply chain within the next four to five years, making the country a major player in the global lithium cell market.

‘Bharat Cell’ represents a significant step towards India’s goal of becoming a global EV hub. By developing its own battery technology, India can reduce its reliance on imports, create domestic jobs, and drive down the cost of electric vehicles. This could lead to a surge in EV adoption in India and potentially propel the country to leadership level in the EV market worldwide.
