In a significant move towards decarbonisation, Adani Power Ltd. (APL) announced its pioneering initiative to utilise green ammonia in conjunction with conventional coal at its Mundra plant in Gujarat, a 330 MW facility.

As part of its comprehensive decarbonization efforts, Adani Power is embarking on a groundbreaking green ammonia combustion pilot project at the Mundra plant. The initiative involves co-firing up to 20 percent green ammonia in the boiler of a conventional coal-fired 330 MW unit. Green ammonia, derived from green hydrogen produced through electrolysis using renewable energy, will serve as a feedstock for the boilers.

One notable feature of green ammonia is its lack of carbon content, resulting in zero CO2 emissions during combustion. This positions green ammonia as a promising, long-term carbon-neutral alternative to traditional fossil fuels.

Adani Power has forged partnerships with IHI and Kowa-Japan for this pilot project, with plans to explore its extension to other APL units and stations. Kowa specialises in energy-saving and energy-creating products, while IHI is a heavy industry company with expertise in ammonia firing technology. Combustion tests, simulating Mundra Power Station equipment, have commenced at IHI's facility in Japan with a 20 percent ammonia blending ratio.

Mundra Plant's selection for this cutting-edge green initiative marks it as the first location outside of Japan to implement such technology. The project has gained recognition under Japan's research agency, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation (NEDO).

Anil Sardana, Managing Director of APL, expressed the company's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint through the adoption of advanced technologies and proactive measures across its business value chain.

He stated that the partnership with IHI and Kowa for blending green ammonia at the Mundra plant is a crucial step in reducing CO2 emissions. Sardana emphasised the company's dedication to integrating cutting-edge technologies progressively to achieve emissions reduction in the intermediate term.
